Welcome to Hell. That's where it seems we are sometimes. 15-year old Hannah Montana seductively cuddles with her father and poses for racy enough photos that she issues an apology before they even come out.
Not to push religion in your face, but come on! You don't need to wear the cloth of the clergy to know a girl that can't have a driver's license probably shouldn't A) be having sex, and B) promote sex.
But that's the world in which we live. Sex is in our mainstream media and thoroughly documented. Hannah Montana, Millions of little girls adore Mylie Cyrus, a.k.a Hannah Montana. So Vanity Fair decides she would make a great cover. They hire famous photographer Annie Leibovitz for the shoot and end up going with a backless shot of Cyrus holding a sheet to her young chest. Leibovitz claims, "The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little make-up, and I think it is very beautiful."
I'm not going to say Leibovitz is a pedophile. She did a fine job. Maybe great, I don't know, I'm not a photography expert. I do not this. In our culture, something like this holds very little power to shock. Sure, it's causing a storm today in the media. But Cyrus issued an apology. Ultimately, the episode will bring more attention to the pop start and probably grow her popularity in the long run.
Here's where things get dicey. Remember the polygamist compound outside San Angelo, Texas, that was raided? Girls were having children at 12 years old, possibly younger. They were forced into marriages with 40-, 50-year old men. The older women had no clue why they were held at gunpoint by authorities and had they children taken from them. It's not just the mainstream that promotes sex. It's everywhere.
Saturday night I went to see a movie called "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". It was hysterical. But at the same time, it blew my mind that it plastered so much sex on the big screen. Forget about internet porn, this stuff makes sex and nudity fun, funny, acceptable, and downright wholesomely entertaining. Full-frontal male nudity in the flick. Two scenes, multiple shots. I lost count of how many actual sex scenes were shown. But hey, what are you gonna go? That's Hollywood, and it's what we pay $10 a ticket for.
I'm no better than the next person when it comes to sex. I've seen my fair share of dirty movies and photos. I've oggled, told dirty jokes, etc. But then here's a child-star that is so big I even heard Troy Aikman admit he's gone to a Hannah Montana concert, and she uses her body to promote her career. And her dad is in the photo shoot! Wow.
But I still don't fault her for that when it's the society in which we live. Her moral compass still directed her to profusely apologize about the pictures to her fans. Only after it garnered negative criticism from the media, granted. But still, she knew enough to retract on her actions. This world may not be going to Hell, but it certainly doesn't do itself a lot of favors.
